This 3-day desert tour from Fes showcases Morocco’s best. You’ll explore authentic Saharan dunes in Erg Chebbi, enjoy a camel ride, and sleep in a beautiful desert tent in Merzouga. Traveling via the Middle Atlas, discover captivating locations like Ifrane, Azrou’s Cedar Forest, and the expansive Ziz Valley. It’s an exceptional way to absorb Moroccan culture and experience the Sahara, perfectly connecting Fes with the wonders of Merzouga.
Your Moroccan desert adventure begins at 8:00 AM as we depart from Fes, setting course for the captivating Merzouga desert. The journey takes us through the picturesque Middle Atlas Mountains, offering ever-changing and breathtaking scenery. A notable stop will be in Azrou, within its famous cedar forest, where you can observe and photograph playful Barbary macaques.
Lunch will be enjoyed in Midelt, a charming town nestled amidst the mountains. Continuing our scenic drive, we’ll then traverse the lush Ziz Valley, renowned for its vast palm groves, vibrant agricultural plots, and spectacular gorges that carve through the landscape. Upon arrival in Merzouga, on the cusp of the Sahara, you’ll check into a comfortable hotel for the night, anticipating the desert adventures that lie ahead.
After breakfast, around 9:00 AM, an exciting 4×4 desert excursion awaits. We’ll delve into the unique culture of Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa people. Here, you’ll experience their soulful, spiritual music and learn about their rich traditions. The exploration continues to a serene desert oasis and includes a special visit to a nomadic family, where you’ll share a traditional cup of mint tea inside their handmade tent, gaining insight into their resilient lifestyle.
Lunch will be served back in Merzouga. Later in the afternoon, prepare for an unforgettable experience: your camels await to carry you on a magical trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes. As the sun begins to set, painting the sky with fiery colors, you’ll arrive at your traditional Sahara desert camp. Spend the evening under a blanket of stars, enjoying dinner and perhaps some Berber music around the campfire.
Wake early to witness a truly magical sunrise, as the first light crests over the vast Sahara dunes – a breathtaking spectacle. Following this, you’ll enjoy a camel ride back to Merzouga village. Here, breakfast will be served, and you’ll have an opportunity for a refreshing shower.
Our return journey to Fes then commences. We’ll explore Rissani, historically significant and home to one of Morocco’s largest traditional souks (markets – particularly vibrant on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays). Next, a stop in Erfoud, known as the “Fossil Capital,” offers a glimpse into its fascinating paleontological heritage. The drive continues back through the diverse landscapes of the Middle Atlas Mountains, with a planned stop for lunch again in Midelt.
In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive back in Fes, where your unforgettable 3-day desert adventure concludes, filled with rich memories.
